"I am considering dreads, but I have fine hair that is relatively thin, and am worried about having pathetic-looking little drowned rat dreads that would make me look like something of a white trash medusa. Any idea how to avoid coming out looking near-bald?"

I would suggest putting some yarn dreads in to see how they would look. Bceause it does give you a pretty good idea, especially if you use natural colored but fun and funky yarn.
This would also be a good way to start your dreads if you have really thin and difficult hair.
My hair was really hard to get started and keep dreaded, putting things in my baby dreads really helped them to loc quicker and grow mature. So, yarn dreads is something I recomend people who are unsure of how it will look and also have difficult to dread hair. It seems to take care of both those problems!
