A Pirate Pagan Grounding
When we as pagans cast a circle we do a bunch of things.
First we ground.
Now, I never understood our grounding. It takes forever and it is a trance, eyes closed, people breathing with long heavy sighs. I am standing there, struggling to picture myself as a tree, to have roots growing out of myroot chakra. I try to go deep, deeper, roots diving through the earth’s crust, past bedrock, and through cool aquifers.
Now, for me this is torture.
I almost failed geology. I don’t remember what an aquifer is. I don’t like playing with worms, and I definitely can’t feel my roots like straws drawing energy up, not that way at least.
But, like a good little witch, I stand there and I fake it, and my mind wanders, and I bring it back to the boulders that my roots are supposed to be going around. And then we reach our tree roots up to the stars and connect, swaying, drawing the cooler energy of the stars down.
Again, I sway. I fake it. I push myself to see a picture of me as a tree, with red energy flowing up and silver energy flowing down. Sometimes I can almost see it, sometimes I think I can almost feel it. I look at others and they see it, they feel it, and it all slips away from me again. It reminds me how I connect on a different level, in a different way then them.
The best grounding I have ever done, lead by Pirate Pussy Bubbles, was a pussy grounding.
Go ahead, laugh, it sounds ridiculous and absurd, but wow, does it work.
Think about it. The purpose of a grounding is to be here now, to be fully present in the moment, to feel connection, and have the wandering mind turn itself off so that spirit can focus on what is next. A grounding is a way to let go of stress and things that could hamper your ability to connect.
Maybe some witches can do that with the traditional tree roots, but for me, all I do is go grocery shopping in my head when I am supposed to be reaching through the earth.
So, how to do a pussy grounding you ask?
Well, first you need an extroverted witch, someone who doesn’t mind daring to be dorky. Someone who can embody sound effects and a church preachy voice.
Picture this. We have our drag pirate Pussy Bubbles offer to lead us in a grounding, through our pussies.
We all bust out laughing, and in that space of laughter he begins.
“Sit hard on the earth, and feeeeeeel (remember the preachy pastor voice), feeeeeeeeeeel your pussy resting on the mother!
Now take a breath, a deep deep breath”
-we all breathe, very deeply and seriously (snicker)-
“Now, on your exhale, breathe down into your vaginas and let her streeeeeeeeetch out! let her lips one by one rise up!! (insert lip slurping sound effect) and push out farther! Let your vaginal lips grow bigger! and breeeeeeth!
_deep seriouse breath-
and again, exhale and push you vagina bigger, her lips out farther!”
We do this a few times, with crazy hysterical laughter, and deep breathing, wonderful visualizations that still make me smile, we breathe and we slurp the sound of our fat vagina lips plopping out farther and farther from our bodies.
“Now, now your vagina is HUGE! Now you are open, stretched and grown, now you can drop your root down. Drop it down and GRIND it in! (preachy pastor voice) Feel how good that feels!! Grind it down, deeper, ugh! Farther!! Ugh!! Faster! UGH!! Drive that root deep into the heat of our mother, and feel her, feel her pulsing inside you, feel your root in ecstasy in her warmth, feel that warmth fill you up, and it feels good!!”

“Now, feel that energy pulsing into you, filling you up, you feel sooo good, you feel like you can’t take it ! UGH! you are about to burst! YES!! Burst up, let her energy flow through your fingers into the stars! Like an explosion, an orgasm of energy! Let is pulse through you, and let the coolness of the stars wash languidly over you. Feel the coolness touch your skin, sooth you after your passionate embrace with the mother, let any excess energy go and breathe it out.
You are here, this is now, we are rooted”
Now, let me tell you, that is a grounding that I can do again and again. This is a grounding that gets me here and keeps in this time called now. This grounding washes away all my thoughts about the day and about what needs to be done for tomorrow. That is what I call connection to energy.
That is one way the pirates ground.
There are other ways we have grounded, by feeling our pulse and breathing with it and knowing our pulse is the pulse of the mother. By holding stones and sinking into the weight of them.
There are many ways we ground, but we do it differently then most, we ground to be here now, to be connected, to open ourselves up to magic, energy, and each other. We ground in ways that work, by toning together, singing and stomping on the earth, we ground to fill ourselves with energy and to get ready for the magical work we are about to do.
And when I am by myself doing magic, I ground by dancing.
Grounding is hard, because it’s point is to clear the mind, connect to energy, and open to magic. It takes time and play to find the way that works for you, but once you find it you will know. Throw the book away, stop following the norm, and start listening to yourself and stepping outside of the pagan box.
Trust in yourself and the goddess, she will show the way.
